We Suck at Comics – Vol #3: Errant Adventures
How I came to submit a story to this anthology.
I have submitted and been accepted for the We Suck at Comics Vol 3 Anthology. Put on by those crazy guys over at Wayward Raven, the book will be Kickstarter funded and have a plethora of great content. This year the theme is centered around “Errant Adventures”
I met the Wayward Raven guys all the way back in 2019, at my first NYCC. They were out there doing what I wanna do. Telling stories, having fun, and making comics. And they had a love of beer. I chatted with them about their first anthology and they were friendly and welcoming and haven’t stopped supporting me since.
I worked on 2 other anthologies at the time, and wasn’t able to sit down and dedicate the time it took to write my own story so after submissions finished on We suck at Comic Vol #2 I made it a point to tell Mark and Alex, I want in on the next one no matter what. And they said they’d keep me in the loop.
At this past Comic Con in New York City we met up for Comic Creators Connections and they made sure I had all the dates. I met a bunch of new people like I always do, and while drinking Guinness and telling tall tales one guy said “ok, if you write the story, I’ll draw it for you. But a one pager is all the time I can do.” I agreed, we shook on it and went our separate ways. Once I got home and posted the Con follow-up, I got started on my story. Writing 1- pager is hard for a long winded story teller like me. Even more so when I didn’t fully know the drawing style my artist would be using. But I made an effort and knocked out 3 smallish stories in a week (none of which were 1 pagers). Then I checked in with my artist. I’m a reformed project manager, so I do that from time to time. He replied, new job, very busy, he’d look over the stories and get back to me. No worries. I checked with Mark, Alex and Steve. The due date was looming. I checked in again. No response for a while. We repeated this back and forth a bit. Until the day of the deadline hit. He hadn’t gotten to it, and he wouldn’t be getting to it. It was just not in his schedule to do so. I emailed Steve, and he talked to the guys. Who, as supportive as always, said “what can you get us now?” I smiled when I sent one story over. They said well if you can knock this out we’ll put it in. Cause they are good guys.
